Top GOP donor threatens to cut off funds if Republicans don't do something about assault weapons in this country.

Courtesy of the New York Times:

A prominent Republican political donor demanded on Saturday that the party pass legislation to restrict access to guns, and vowed not to contribute to any candidates or electioneering groups that did not support a ban on the sale of military-style firearms to civilians.

Al Hoffman Jr., a Florida-based real estate developer who was a leading fund-raiser for George W. Bush’s campaigns, said he would seek to marshal support among other Republican political donors for a renewed assault weapons ban.

“For how many years now have we been doing this — having these experiences of terrorism, mass killings — and how many years has it been that nothing’s been done?” Mr. Hoffman said in an interview. “It’s the end of the road for me.”

Mr. Hoffman announced his ultimatum in an email to half a dozen Republican leaders, including Jeb Bush and Gov. Rick Scott of Florida. He wrote in the email that he would not give money to Mr. Scott, who is considering a campaign for the Senate in 2018, or other Florida Republicans he has backed in the past, including Representative Brian Mast, if they did not support new gun legislation.

“I will not write another check unless they all support a ban on assault weapons,” he wrote. “Enough is enough!”

You know if Mr. Hoffman can get enough of his fellow GOP donors to agree with him, this might be the thing that starts a real change in this country.

It would also help if people cancelled their NRA memberships until they started lobbying for better laws to control access to these military style weapons as well.

Just a thought.

This needs to be plastered on walls and windows all over the country.

Nice to see only one from my corner of the US (New England, and NY, etc). That was NH Senator Kelly Ayotte, who lost her seat in the Senate in '16 to Gov. Maggie Hassan, a gun control advocate. So, the next time there is such a list I hope to see zero from our part of the country.

Donnie dildo dotard made a Deal with the Devil. Donnie dildo dotard sold America to a communist DICKtater to pay his debt. Americans are suffering in our fair and polite way while our citizens are poisoned, shot and murdered. Silently we cry and hope that it is fake news. Americans for Mr. Mueller, our law enforcement, our military, will remove those that enabled this liar and cheat from our buildings. Those that stand with Donnie dildo shithole will not survive. It is war and Americans will win.

It pleases me that virtually none of the money now goes to Democrats. It worries me that some still does. It also worries me that Trump's friends the Russians have been giving money to the NRA. That shows how insane the gun lobby in this country is.

I am also concerned about a headline in yesterday's "Washington Post" to the effect that Congress is "unable" to do anything about the gun crisis. The only people in the country who can to anything about it are members of Congress. The problem is that Republicans are too beholden to the gun lobby and too craven and too cowardly to do anything.

For starters Congress should make getting a gun much, much harder with many steps involved. They should require extremely expensive insurance for the ownership of any kind of gun. Then they should make having any kind of military weaponry, like the weapon used in Parkland, virtually impossible to own - complete with severe penalties for having one. The problem won't go away overnight but it will diminish over time.

And, first of all and simplest of all, dirty money from foreign countries should not be anywhere near US politicians. Both the politicians and the organizations involved should be punished severely.

    Cripes.
A gun humping cousin who has PTSD from Afghanistan and Iraq is all over FB about protecting guns. Posting shit comparing our gun deaths with central american, saying if we take out Detroit, DC we'd be third not first.
And this all makes sense to him. Like he is making valid phucking points.
Waiting for his answer on why anyone needs an assault rifle. If one feels the need to shoot one, go to a range and rent one and have your orgasms over it. Don't need to own one. I like to skate but don't own a rink and can't flood my street in the winter to make one.

Trump committed TREASON, Republicans enabled and committed TREASON. BOTH must resign and face the charges. It is the only remedy.

We are not doing so well because we are a mess. We are not the greatest. It trickles down upon everything.
It is just indicative of how far we are falling.

    3. USA has never done well in the Winter Olympics. We shine in the Summer Olympics. Also, I agree with 9:21, we suck from the top down and once we are rid of the Orange Blob, Don the Con, we can get back to being the old, great USA that we once upon a time were.
