The White House is pushing the idea that the Russian interference had no impact on the outcome of the 2016 election. But that is false.

That tweet is actually part of a longer campaign by the Trump White House to dismiss the impact of the Russian interference by claiming that even if it happened it did not have any effect.

But that is NOT what the intelligence agencies determined.

Courtesy of Politico:

Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper on Thursday rebuffed a claim by Vice President Mike Pence that intelligence officials concluded that Russian meddling didn't have "any impact on the outcome of the 2016 election," saying it "stretches credulity" to say Moscow's interference didn't affect any voters' decisions.

"The intelligence community has neither the authority nor the capability to make such a judgment as to whether there was or was not impact on the election," Clapper said. "And we did not say that."

Clapper added that it was "absolutely" possible that foreign influence campaigns had swayed voters, even though authorities had not made a definitive ruling on the matter.

“I will say now that I’m not in an official position that it stretches credulity, given the magnitude, scope and depth of the Russian efforts, that they didn’t have impact on individual voter decisions," Clapper said. "But again, the intelligence community did not and could not gauge the impact on individual voter decisions.”

And keep in mind that just because these most recent indictments make no allegations that the meddling changed the outcome of the election, does not mean that is the conclusion of the intelligence agencies, or that it will be Mueller's ultimate conclusion.

Wired Magazine certainly disagrees that the Russians did not alter the outcome of the election in an article entitled DID RUSSIA AFFECT THE 2016 ELECTION? IT’S NOW UNDENIABLE:

The groups and narratives identified in the indictment were integral parts of the frenzied election circus that built momentum, shaped perceptions, and activated a core base of support for now-President Trump—just as they helped disgust and dismay other groups, making them less likely to vote (or to vote for marginal candidates in protest).

In the indictment, Trump campaign officials are referred to as “unwitting” participants in Russian information warfare. This gives the White House an out—and a chance to finally act against what the Kremlin did. But the evidence presented in the indictment makes it increasingly hard to say Russian efforts to influence the American mind were a failure.

In my mind there has never really been a question of whether the Russians altered the outcome of the election.

Of course they did.

But they also had help from James Comey, the House Republicans with their constant investigations, and the American media.

I am not sure that the Russians could have pulled this off without that extra help, but I do know that with this victory they are only going to amplify their efforts in the elections to come.

Putting in place strong sanctions, and protections, might head that off.

But with Putin's puppet in the White House, we know that will likely not happen.

  1. They'll have to walk back everything they say, one tweet at a time.

First they said there was no Russian interference. Now there is, but it didn't influence the election.

Next they'll have to walk back the interference.

    Then walk back the collusion.

Mueller will keep plodding on, collecting proof and building cases. Little by little. That's what prosecutors do. It will be iron clad and air tight.

And every time Trump and his minions claim that's the end and there wasn't any "[fill in the blank]" they'll have to walk it back at the next round of indictments.

Mueller may be slow but he will be thorough.

It will be too slow to impeach Trump but quick enough to ensure he won't be running in 2020.

As is always the case, the underlings will be convicted and those at the top will get off.

The next president will pardon whoever so as not to bring a scandal to the government or to heal or move on or whatever the current bullshit is.

We had a chance to indict Bush and Cheney for war crimes. Other countries did. We took a pass.

    Nixon got off.

Nothing is going to happen to Trump either.

I just hope those cheeseburgers, shakes and that fried chicken finally catches up with his arteries.

We are one sick nation...Trump needs to be hung from the rafters. Those that voted for him were idiots and it's being proven daily.

last election we saw a sudden shift of discord here in America. Then on election night we all had the shock of our lives. America had elected a demagogue.
Now we are here. In Russia land. Don't tell me there was not swaying of numbers in computers. It happened. Putin likes to deny away reality. But if it didn't happen then we wouldn't be putting up with that asshole in the White House. History will be the ultimate judge.

They're going to start pushing the idea that since they didn't change votes, it didn't matter.

Oh, but they did! Hillary Clinton should be in the White House (majority vote!) and our country would be a much better place were she, President Hillary Clinton!

3:01, what is this 'majority vote' business? Trump won the majority vote that puts people in the White House, and as such, he is President. What is so hard to understand about this? It has been more than a year now, do you still not know how Presidential Elections work?

3:01 PM - Trump won electoral, not actual voting, lost by 3+ million, and yes I do. HUGE difference.

Who is in the White House because they won the way the Presidential Election system is set up 4:04?

Who is not in the White House because even though she had over 3 million votes more cast for her in California 4:04? But of course that does not translate nationwide. California does not get to elect a President all on it's own. She did win California Electoral votes though. Goody goody for her.

What a little world you live in.

the electoral college. like gun laws, has served its purpose and both are now outdated. It is called change in circumstances.
      Needs to change.

4:53.... so basically you think because Hillary ran a terrible campaign and lost, at a game she has been rigging for decades, that it is time for an amendment to the Constitution... because Hilary?

What a cry baby, he has been in office for over a year and he still so afraid that the world will find out the election was rigged, he stole the election and is not the legitimate president that he is having a breakdown.

I hope it keeps him up at night so he can pig out on more cheeseburgers.

"THE PRESIDENT (Obama): Good afternoon, everybody. Yesterday, before votes were tallied, I shot a video that some of you may have seen in which I said to the American people: Regardless of which side you were on in the election, regardless of whether your candidate won or lost, the sun would come up in the morning.

And that is one bit of prognosticating that actually came true. The sun is up. And I know everybody had a long night. I did, as well. I had a chance to talk to President-elect Trump last night -- about 3:30 in the morning, I think it was -- to congratulate him on winning the election. And I had a chance to invite him to come to the White House tomorrow to talk about making sure that there is a successful transition between our presidencies."

3:59 it takes at least 270 Electoral College votes to win the Presidency.

Trump pretty much blew Clinton out of the water on Electoral College votes. Ran a smart campaign. Obama, and other sane people, are aware how the system works and that Trump Won.

You don't need to lecture me, 4:07 PM, I know how it works. Gerrymandering districts and any electoral vote can be bought for the right price.

    8. Anonymous7:46 PM

Gerrymandering districts lol? In a national election? How exactly does that work when each state has a statewide count?

The Electoral College (generally)votes with the winners of each States Election winning results 7:19.... How is that a 'bought' vote? I'll guarantee you Trump did not take any Electoral Votes from States he did not win.

You do need a lecture 7:19, badly.

    9. 7:46

You only have to disenfranchise voters and gerrymander districts in key states.

Or aren't you familiar with what is going on in Pennsylvania right now?

In each of the key electoral states that Trump "won", more voters were disenfranchised than the margin he won by.

I'm talking about their registrations being dropped, not receiving requested absentee ballots, polling places eliminated to ensure long lines and waiting for hours (on a work day), eliminated early voting, changing voters polling places, trying to fool voters by giving out incorrect information regarding polling places and election days. There are endless ways the GOP rigged the election.

There is the server that was wiped AFTER a judge ruled it as evidence in a lawsuit and ordered it preserved. How very....convenient.

Voting machines that voters reported as not being accurate and of course, no paper trail. We all know about Diebold.

Your defense is basically full of shit.

Of course, a Russian or uneducated voter might not know enough about how the system works to understand how gerrymandering can give Republicans enough winning votes in a state. As you said, they only have to win the state.

It's the electoral college we need to get rid of along with paperless voting machines and partisan dividing of districts. Yes, I am aware that Democrats do it too. But as in all corruption, the GOP does it more and better.

‘As Bad as the Comey Firing’: White House Enters Second Week of the Rob Porter ‘Sh*t Show’

For an administration used to epic scandals, this has been one of the worst.

...Few recall similar levels of chaos engulfing the ranks. What’s worse: Multiple senior West Wing officials have conveyed privately to The Daily Beast their fear that the ongoing Rob Porter scandal, and the intense fallout implicating top staffers, will only get worse in the days to come.

“As bad as the Comey firing,” one White House official bluntly assessed, expressing a sentiment shared this week by several senior Trump aides—that the tumult and mismanagement of the past few days is only matched by mayhem kicked off by the sacking of FBI Director James Comey in May.

Such angst echoes an even more troublesome reality playing out of public view. Aides and confidants say that trust between the internal White House departments has been damaged by the failure to adequately explain why Porter—who stands accused by two ex-wives of physical and emotional abuse—was able to stay on the job for as long as he did. There are persistent rumors that the news of Porter’s past alleged abuses was initially leaked to the press by someone inside the administration. And though the White House publicly insists that Chief of Staff John Kelly enjoys the trust and faith of the president, there are notable rumblings of discontent over his handling of the matter, in and outside of the administration.
