Donald Trump responds to news of a US Navy destroyer crash with a flippant "That's too bad." However Breitbart says that's not his fault.

Courtesy of WaPo:

Ten U.S. Navy sailors were missing and five were injured after the USS John S. McCain guided missile destroyer and an oil tanker more than three times its size collided near Singapore early Monday.

American and Singaporean ships and helicopters launched a search-and-rescue mission after the pre-dawn collision at the entrance to one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes.

Five injured and ten missing, but when Trump was asked about the incident, this was his response:  President Donald Trump’s initial reaction to the crash of the USS John McCain with a merchant ship east of Singapore that left five sailors injured and ten missing was: “That’s too bad.”

Later of course after the blowback Trump's advisers apparently got hold of his Twitter account and tweeted this:
I think that is like the Hallmark card version of a presidential condolence.

"Sorry to hear your ship got smashed. Hope you get well soon."

Kind of makes you wonder if the fact that the ship was named after the guy whose vote spiked Trumpcare has anything to do with Trump's dismissive attitude?

No, don't be silly. According to Breitbart there is really a simply answer that deflects the blame away from Trump:

A source with direct knowledge of these matters tells Breitbart News that the senior staff at the White House, including National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster, did not brief President Donald Trump on the collision the Navy destroyer USS John McCain had with an oil tanker near Singapore before he originally seemingly dismissed the incident saying, “that’s too bad.”

Yes, it's not that Donald Trump is an insensitive POS, it's that the guy who Stephen Bannon just lost a power struggle with in the White House is incompetent at his job.

Seems perfectly clear.

ISIS has taken over merchant ships and are trying to sink all the Navy vessels.

President Trump now has a plan to sink all merchant ships around the world.

    Game on.

Well, of course. Trump will blame President Obama tomorrow just after he blames Hillary Clinton's emails.

Trump has no clue how to express sorrow and/or empathy to the nation! He doesn't feel it!

The guy is a fucking disaster as potus!

Didn't brief him? he doesn't READ his briefs! But he IS online and watching Fox 23 hours a day. Surely he heard about this somewhere. My response when he's hauled off to jail, "That's too bad."

O/T John Milton, grim on Eclipses in Paradise Lost

‘O dark, dark, dark, amid the blaze of noon’
As we wait for this show to get started, we’re looking back on some greatest hits of eclipse history … or, in this case, eclipse literature.
John Milton had a grim view of eclipses in Paradise Lost:
As when the Sun new ris'n
Looks through the Horizontal misty Air
Shorn of his Beams, or from behind the Moon
In dim Eclips, disastrous twilight sheds
On half the Nations, and with fear of change
    Perplexes monarchs.
And it only got grimmer a few years later, in Samson Agonistes:
O dark, dark, dark, amid the blaze of noon,
    Irrecoverably dark, total Eclipse
    Without all hope of day!
O first created Beam, and thou great Word,
    Let there be light, and light was over all;
Why am I thus bereav‘d thy prime decree?
The Sun to me is dark
    And silent as the Moon,
    When she deserts the night
Hid in her vacant, interlunar cave.

    — Camila Domonoske https://twitter.com/camilareads

Worth noting: Milton himself was going blind (of non-eclipse related causes) as he wrote those despairing lines.

10 Sailors Still Missing After USS John McCain Collides With Oil Tanker
When President Trump was asked about the incident last night he replied, “that’s too bad.” He later tweeted out that his thoughts and prayers were with the US Navy sailors.
    http://gizmodo.com/10-sailors-still-missing-after-uss-john-mccain-collides-1798146538

The incident with the USS John S. McCain comes on the heels of a bad year for the US Navy. The USS Fitzgerald collided with the merchant vessel ACX Crystal back on June 17, 2017. The report on that collision concluded that the collision “was avoidable and both ships demonstrated poor seamanship.” Seven sailors died during that collision.

USS Fitzgerald. About 1:30 a.m. on 17 June 2017, Fitzgerald collided with ACX Crystal, a Philippine-flagged container ship

With the recent USS Fitagerald collision this is only more traumatic and alarming to military minds. The Commander in Chief's reaction only more apparent. Is he autistic? His mental health evaluation is all the more vital for America. People have a right to know what is wrong with what we must witness.

It is great that Donald and Melania have this interest in science, the family is sharing a teachable moment as they watch the eclipse in DC. Where is Barron? Did Melania have him removed to protect him from his father?

Are you being sarcastic, Anon at 11:34 am? The Washington Post has a front-page photo of Trump looking directly up at the sun. He did that until an aide shouted to him that he shouldn't look at it. Everyone everywhere in the US has been told over and over again for the past two weeks that it is bad to look directly at a solar eclipse. What an imbecile we have in the White House now!

All the electronics in the world won't save your ass if you aren't paying attention.
Such a tragic waste of life.
Heads should surely roll on this one.
Probably won't get a clear statement as the Navy plays CYA.
      So very sad.

Imagine the GOP's reaction had President Obama ever reacted to a military mess-up like that. Imagine Trump's reaction!

The 45 president of the United States could care less about what happens to anyone. Lives, whether civilian or military, do not matter to Trump. All that matters is finding himself praised for something, anything.

Why would McMaster (NSA) have anything to do with this? He wouldn't', not at this point. But if he made a mistake can we call yell BENGAHZI now and lock him up?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Yes, I think his response has everything to do with the ship's name. Plus callous disregard. "Why are you interrupting me with this when I have other stuff to tweet? Why do I have to respond everything something like this happens?"

Now, as to this incident, this happened not too long ago with a sister ship.

I'm not thinking crew incompetence. I'm not thinking leadership problems.

    I'm thinking more fundamental.

Ships have all sorts of stuff to keep them on course and prevent them running in to each other.

If our elections can be hacked, why not our military ships?

I think this may be an early test of that.

They're hacking the GPS, guidance, radar, whatever. I'll bet they have wireless communications with satellites and all sorts of other stuff.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was hackers intentionally steering these ships into other ships just to see if they could do it; test out the ship's vulnerabilities and their own ability to control them.

Call me paranoid. Call me susceptible to conspiracy theories.

But considering all that *has* happened, I don't think this is all that much of a stretch.

Your theory is quite plausible; it would not surprise me at all. If this is the case, the Navy would keep that well under wraps.

So, WHY, according to Breitfart, was he not briefed on the accident beforehand???
Also: even if he was not briefed, what kind of an a$$ response IS that?

This is the fourth 'accident/incident' with the Navy in the Pacific this year. Why does this keep happening?

Why wouldn't this be a priority briefing?

Brietbat is part of the cover Trump ass machine. They will lie unless what's his name, recent fired guy? When he has a beef he may not lie or he may lie.

It all depends on the whims of the criminally insane.
